Philippines Dispatch

As soon as I was wheelsdown in the Philippines, I knew I’d have an interesting visit. Both from the air and on the ground, Manila looks very much like how a child might construct a city if they were given a giant pile of Lego blocks and no specific instructions on how to build it. It is very colorful but also very hodge-podge. For one thing, it looks like it was laid out without any sort of long-term planning. Nothing is very straight or orderly; everything looks like it was done in stages, with no existing things upgraded or improved, just new things tacked on. It presented as by far the most stereotypically “Asian-adventure” of the cities I visited, as conceived in American minds.
