Tulsa, OK — This year’s National Center for Wellness & Recovery Addiction Medicine Conference is bringing together experts in addiction and mental health with attendees from Oklahoma and throughout the country. Via a virtual online conference, healthcare professionals will learn the latest in addiction research, treatment and prevention in courses led by experts from NCWR and the OSU Center for Health Sciences. The conference begins Sept. 16 and is available at a work-at-your-own-pace format through Sept. 30 as Continued Medical Education. Registration is open through Sept. 28.
“Since we are currently at the height of the drug overdose epidemic, it is more important than ever to have the most up to date knowledge regarding addiction,” said Jason Beaman D.O., M.S., M.P.H., FAPA, executive director for training and education for NCWR and chair of the OSU-CHS Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. “We want Oklahoma providers to know that the information they receive is evidence-based, up to date, and bias free.”
The two-part conference is made up of the Update in Addiction Medicine and Foundations in Addiction Medicine series and designed to provide the latest evidence-based information in the fight against addiction, while breaking down stigma around the disease.
Update in Addiction Medicine is a review of the latest and greatest in research and treatment in addiction medicine in the state of Oklahoma. The series includes courses such as Treatment of Meth Use Disorder, Sleep and Addiction and How Clinical Neuroscience Could Reshape the Future of Addiction Medicine.
The conference’s Foundations in Addiction Medicine series provides an in-depth review of the field of addiction medicine and is joined by participants from more than a dozen states.
“Our Foundations series is perfect for the primary care physician wanting to learn more about substance use and how to treat them,” said Beaman.
Foundations features 18 different courses and is designed to be a “crash course” for those interested in learning more about addiction medicine. With courses such as Pain and Addiction, Substance Use in Adolescents, Psychiatric Co-Morbidities, andPrevention of Substance Use Disorders, it also serves as a review course for those wanting to sit for the addiction medicine exam.
Kelly Dunn, M.D., executive director of treatment for NCWR, will lead three of these courses and stresses the importance of addiction education not just for patients and loved ones, but for health providers as well.
“Stigma from loved ones as well as healthcare personnel is one of the biggest barriers to patients receiving treatment,” said Dunn. “Understanding addiction and addiction treatment diminishes stigma and empowers people to view this disease no longer as one of despair but one of hope.”
The virtual format allows participants to work at their own pace and earn up to 23.5 CME credits. Update in Addiction Medicine offers up to 4 CME credits and Foundations in Addiction Medicine offers up to 19.5 CME credits. Participants may register for one or both series.
