Helping Community Paws and Claws has created a special project to say “thank you” to the community for their support. The HCPC is collecting prom dresses for local girls in need for this year’s high school prom.

The charity received some prom dresses during the HCPC garage sale last October, and it gave Lisa New the idea to donate them, instead of selling them for funds. She and Tammie Hulsey Riggs put the word out and have since received 25 dresses so far.

“We’re not selling them,” explained Riggs, “This is just something that really doesn’t have anything to do with the animals. It’s just to give back to the community for all that they’ve done for helping with the animals. [Lisa New] wanted the girls in town that couldn’t afford to go to be able to go.”

On April 15th, the girls will meet up at the First United Presbyterian Church in Guthrie to receive their dresses, shoes, and other things they may need for prom. This “Shopping Day” is at no cost to the girls.

The HCPC Prom Dress Drive needs more dresses, shoes, jewelry, little purses, hair accessories, and other items for prom from donors as well. They would like to have all items collected by April 10th to prepare for the give away. Guthrie’s prom is on April 29th this year.

The project is also seeking a local dry cleaner to clean the dresses before the 15th as well as more volunteers to help with the Shopping Day, especially anyone with any seamstress or tailoring skills who could help with any minor alterations needed to make sure dresses fit.

“This is a great way for the community to come together to support these girls in need,” said Riggs. “Every girl should be able to have a pretty dress to go to prom.”

Donors, volunteers, and Guthrie girls who need a prom dress but cannot afford to buy one should contact Riggs via email at tammie.hulsey@yahoo. com or through a private message on her Facebook page at facebook.com/ tammie.hulsey.3 with their need and their dress size. They can also reach out through the “Drop Us A Line” feature on the hcpcok. org website.

Helping Community Paws and Claws is a spay and neuter program for dogs and cats of Logan County.
