Early this afternoon, a Guthrie Junior High School student reported to a teacher that another student was in possession of a grenade. The building Principal was immediately notified and searched a bag the identified student had in their possession. The bag contained what appeared to be an inert (non-functioning) practice rifle grenade. The School Resource Officer for the building was immediately summoned for assistance. The Guthrie Police Department removed the practice rifle grenade from the premises and provided it to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol bomb disposal unit.

The matter is under investigation by the building administration and the Guthrie Police Department.

Quotes from Guthrie Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mike Simpson:

"We take school safety seriously at Guthrie Public Schools," Simpson said. "It is the responsibility of everyone to assist us in keeping our students safe. We are very thankful for the student who reported what they saw as well as the swift action of our teacher, administrators and resource officer."
