Did you know that BBQ sauce has a rich history in the United States, and even across the world? Many believe that it was first discovered in a Dominican missionary. The recipe consisted mostly of lime juice and pepper, but today there are all kinds of BBQ sauces to choose from that come from a variety of cultures. NumerousM-OFFA members recently learned about the history behind some of their favorite BBQ Sauces, as well as how to make them.

Mulhall-Orlando High School students taking Agriscience II have recently learned about food science and the importance of food safety. They focused on food processing, preservation, and marketing. Tonya Middleton, agricultural educationalist and FFA advisor, decided to wrap up the section with a friendly BBQ sauce contest.

First, the students were instructed to do research on their favorite type of BBQ sauce. Next, the students came up with an original recipe and made a list of ingredients that they would need. After listing steps for making their new sauce, they were able to design their own label and name. With the help of Mrs. Middleton, the students gathered all the items that they needed and made their BBQ sauce during their class period. Some decided to do things differently by making unusual sauces, such as pumpkin spice BBQ sauce, while others chose a classic sweet and tangy flavor. The following day, Mulhall-Orlando high school teachers and cooks got to try the different BBQ sauces and voted on what they believed to be the best one.

Sophomore Brock Aldridge won the contest with a tangy sauce that had a little bit of spice to it. He enjoyed the experience of making his own recipe, and the class agreed that it was a great way to wrap up the food science section.
