Lady Bluejays win regional track meet

Guthrie High’s Lady Bluejays won their regional track and field meet at Jenks High School on Saturday, beating out Glenpool 154-117, and tuned up for this weekend’s state meet.

The boys team finished second place in its meet with 95.5 points, well behind Coweta’s 171.

Cheyenne Gaymon led the girls with first-place finishes in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. In the 100 event, she won in 16.15 seconds after qualifying at 15.89 on Friday. In the 300 event, Gaymon beat Alexis Queen of Collinsville 50.2850.85 to claim her second regional title.

Taylor Mays also grabbed valuable points for the Lady Bluejays with a fourth-place finish (54.32) in the 300 hurdles and a fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles (18.43). where Mary Vaughan placed third (17.81).

Junior Kamryn Boller earned a trip to Yukon this weekend with first-place finishes in the 3,200 (13:00.10) and the 1,600 (5:42.06). Hannah Smith was third in the 1,600 (5:52.29). Peyton Read ran 6:21.49 but fell short of state qualifying.

Senior Anjewl Murillo will be out to defend her Class 5A 400-meter title after winning in Jenks in 58.24 to claim the regional championship. Guthrie also got points from Alyana Wallace with a fifthplace finish in 1:02.95. Klaribel Kirk was eighth in 1:05.57.

Alyssa Vaughan won the pole vault, beating Brooklyn Toomey in a jump-off at 9-6. The 1-2 finish gave Guthrie 18 valuable team points.

Read qualified in the 800 meters with a fourthplace finish in a time of 2:32.65. Raley Hooper ran 2:39.99 in the same race but did not qualify.

In the relay races, which are worth double points, Guthrie placed second in the 4x800 as Sapulpa beat the Lady Bluejays, 10:20.63-10:23.08. Boller, Read, Smith and Kristie Botello led the way.

In the 4x200, Guthrie was third place as Wallace, Gaymon, Murillo and Haley Gallo ran 1:46.88, behind Durant and Glenpool.

The 4x100 team of Gallo, Gaymon, Murillo, and Lily Rechlin took fourth in 50.70, and the 4x400 relay of Wallace, Murillo, Kirk and Read were runners-up in 4:14.08 behind Durant.

Rechlin claimed second place in the high jump at 5-2 and fifth place in the long jump at 14-10. Wallace and Vaughan were eighth and ninth in the high jump.

Sallee leads Bluejays to second The second-place Bluejays’ lone regional champion was senior Lance Sallee in the 3,200 race in 10:25.37. Isaiah Blevins was fourth in 10:33.48.

Sallee also qualified in the 1,600 with a secondplace finish in 4:45.87. Eli Fortney was third (4:47.43) and Blevins was sixth (4:55.28).

In the relay events, the Guthrie team of James Bickell, Eli Kirk, Isaac Talley and Corbin Madison qualified after running 9:32.58 in the 4x800 relay.

The 4x100 team of Kyran Axtell, Jaylen Chelf, Alex Juarez and Marshal Self took second in 43.27. And, the 4x200 relay of Axtel, Chelf, Self and Nate Benford placed third (1:30.68) to also qualify.

In the 4x400, Guthrie was third in 3:29.20 with Axtel, Benford, Self and Tyrin Eaton.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Gideon Hiel (16.92) and Lael Dressen (17.91) placed fifth and eighth.

Chelf will be in the 100-meter semifinals on Friday after finishing third in 11.08. In the 200-meter finals, Self took third place in 22.39 to qualify for state.

In the field events, Dayton Hoaglin cleared 11-0 in the pole vault and qualified as a fourth-place finisher. Zeb Talley cleared 10-0, but missed on the top 16.

Chelf was fourth in the long jump at 20-6.50 to earn a trip in yet another event. Justin Berryhill will throw the discus for Guthrie this weekend after finishing fifth with a throw of 134-04.
