Charles “Charlie” Nance Smith was born to Carl P. Smith, Sr. and Naomi Smith in 1949 in Oklahoma City. Growing up in a rambunctious family with three brothers, Carl P. Smith, Jr., Walter “Skip” Smith, and Clay Smith, Charlie loved to explore and play with his brothers. He attended Classen High School and was a basketball star, as he led the state in scoring his senior year, averaging a gaudy 29.9 points per game. Charlie was named All-State and still, after 50 years, holds the all-time record for points in a game and total points in a season.

Charlie moved to Guthrie, readily adopting it as his new hometown. He purchased and restored the Fairfield House, opening a Bed & Breakfast and earning a prestigious Foucart Award from the Logan County Historical Society.

Charlie’s passions were friends, antiques, classic cars and historical properties. He brought a great spirit and enthusiasm to the coffee group at Rick’s Coffee.

Charlie last resided in his home, the former West Side Fire Station, which he had bought and restored over the past decade.

Charlie passed away suddenly on June 18, 2023 in a skilling nursing facility after a short illness.

He will be dearly missed by friends and family.
