“If you can walk, you can square dance!”

The Teacup Chains Square Dance Club in Edmond is offering a fun and friendly exercise option.

Learn how to square dance for the next 10 weeks for only $25 per person for the entire session, What a deal! For less than the expense of a dinner date for two out on the town you can have a fun experience that will last a lifetime.

We sat down with Caller, Jeff Holley, to get the low down on classes.

The classes will be held for ten weeks, twice a week on Monday and Thursday, beginning on Thursday, September 7th, 2023. The classes will run from 7pm to 9pm.  They are located at the Multipurpose Activity Center, The MAC in Mitch Park in Edmond at 2733 Marilyn Williams Drive.

Holley let us know, “If you can walk you can square dance!” Physical demands are basic and allow people of all ages and abilities to participate, exercise and most importantly have fun.

Is there a dress code? Dress is casual and comfortable and just make sure the shoes are something comfortable that you can move around in easily.

Jeff Holley explains how the classes work. “This class starts with basic and goes through mainstream. The caller will teach all the moves. The first part of the dance is called Hash and that is where the caller calls that he wants and moves the dancers around getting back to ‘home’ with a partner. The second part is called a singing call, where the girls progress around the square to each of the men and finish back at home.”

The square-dancing classes move to all types of music including country, rock, easy listening, gospel and more, making it appeal to all interests.

Holley also emphasized singles are welcome. Meaning come join the fun even if you don’t have a partner to join. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and friends in a casual fun environment.

It is no mystery to Holley why you should take square dancing classes. “It is great exercise and great for the mind. You get to meet so many new friends for life. Square dancers are GREAT people!”

Jeff has been a caller for decades, having begun when he was only 15. He fell in love with it growing up around it, seeing and hearing, his father and brother as callers as well.

Holley calls for 7 clubs, four clubs in the Oklahoma City area, one in Edmond, one in Tulsa and one in Wichita Falls, Texas. He also does call festivals and calls weekends around the surrounding states.

The caller leaves us with the recommendation to try it emphasizing it is not like it used to and he guarantees, “if you try it you will be hooked!”

 “We have lots of younger folks dancing now, and they are having a blast.” Holley adds to come on out, and “you will see just how much fun you have been missing out on.”
