Wilene Simoneaux, age 78 of Guthrie, Oklahoma passed away on May 20, 2023. She was born on February 11, 1945 to Don and Ada (Taylor) Tripp. No services are planned at this time. Many people are eager for Independence Day celebrations in early summer. There is much to be excited about, as festivities often begin in the afternoon with barbecues and pool parties, and commence late at night after fireworks shows that light up the night sky. Still, not everyone enjoys the extra noise and busy nature of July 4th parties, particularly furry members of the family.

Plenty of people can be found working their grilling magic year-round. But the vast majority of people do the bulk of their grilling over the summer, when warm temperatures contribute to a relaxed atmosphere that makes outdoor cooking and dining that much more appealing.

Guthrie’s Public Works Authority has made the difficult decision not to open the municipal pool at Highland park due to drought conditions and low lake water levels. The City of Guthrie explained in a press release on May 23rd, 2023, that the pool requires 238,000 gallons of water to fill and an additional 40,000 gallons a day to maintain. This is not feasible this year without risking public water availability.

The Guthrie High School Special Olympians at their send-off on May 17 to Stillwater for the spring games through May 19. GHS sent over 50 athletes and coaches to the annual event. The Territorial Riders and Guthrie Police Department supplied the escort out of the city and to Stillwater. The GHS band, cheerleaders, and student body were all on hand as part of the sendoff ceremonies at the front of the high school.
