Guthrie resident relishes dedication to volunteering

Bob Beck said his early life was one of struggles and poverty, constantly moving with his transient family and living in 45 states throughout his childhood. Now 85, he can reflect on his lifelong dedication of volunteering to help others, which has earned him recognition around Guthrie, one of the towns in which he grew up.

Bluejays host Wildcats to kick off season Friday night

Guthrie High’s football team opens its 2023 season Friday night at 7 against the Ponca City Wildcats at Jelsma Stadium. The Bluejays won last season’s game in Ponca City 35-23 on their way to a 9-3 season, while the Wildcats were 6-6 and advanced to the Class 6A quarterfinals. The Bluejays next travel to Woodward and Duncan before returning Sept. 15 for Homecoming.

The Guthrie Rotary Club Student of the Week is Guthrie Job Corps student, Verna Duvernois. Verna is from Oklahoma City. He studying Electrical House Wiring and for his high school diploma. He plans to do advanced training and would like to be an overhead lineman in Texas. Pictured with Verna is Kris Morgan with Veteran Flags by Vets and Rotary President, Tyler Calvert.

Guthrie softball team off to 6-0 start

What a way to open the season! Guthrie High’s Lady Bluejays softball team won its first six games in a four-day span, starting at the Pryor Festival on Aug. 8 with a 5-2 win against Coweta and an 11-0 rout of Claremore.

Lady Bluejays runners win opening meet in Enid

Guthrie High’s cross country teams got off to a running start in a 2-mile season-opening meet at Enid on Saturday. The girls won their three-team division over Enid 21-34, while the boys were second to the host school, 44-24.
