Guthrie Rotary student of the week

The Guthrie Rotary Club Student of the Week is Abbie Eichler. She is the daughter of Milynda and Bryan Eichler. Abbie is active in fast pitch and slow pitch softball, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Math Club. She was the 2020 5A Defensive Player of the Year, the 2022 5A Offensive Player of the Year and the Bluejay Nutrition Athlete of the Week. After graduation, Abbie will attend college and major in English, to become an author. Pictured with Abbie is Rotary President, Tyler Calvert.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day

The National POW/ MIA Recognition Day was estaablished in 1979 as a day to remember those service members who are either a prisoner of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA) and is not associated with any particular war. POW/ MIA recognition day is established by a resolution of Congress and signed into being by Presitent Jimmy Carter is observed on the third Friday of September. This year it falls on September 15th. Traditionaly the President of the United States issues a Presidentiall proclimation on the third Friday every September in support of this day.

In the August 9th edition of the Guthrie News Leader there were a couple of errors that need to be clarified. In Community Corner, Battling Animal overpopulation with compassion, not cruelty, the article stated that Lisa New of Helping Paws and Claws, Inc., was pushing for funding from the City of Guthrie and should have read pushing for an ordinance to be passed by the city.

The National FFA Agriscience Fair recognizes student researchers engaging in the application of agricultural scientific principles and emerging technologies in agricultural enterprises.

Tigers 3-0 after big road win at Morrison

Piling up 336 yards of offense Friday night, the visiting Crescent Tigers built a three-touchdown lead and held off Morrison 28-18 to improve to 3-0. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead, ignited by a 77-yard pass play from Tanner Rice to CJ Wilson, before Morrison closed the gap to 21-6 at the half and then 21-18 in the second half before Rice scored late on a 1-yard run to seal it.

Bluejays earn third straight shutout, 65-0

Guthrie High’s football team is headed into Homecoming weekend with plenty of momentum after the Bluejays recorded their third consecutive shutout, 65-0 against Duncan on Friday night. The Bluejays (3-0) took advantage of a dominant running game that racked up 317 yards on the ground on 52 plays and another 114 yards in the passing game for 431 total yards to score nine touchdowns.

City Council rejects ordinance change for cat overpopulation issue

The Guthrie City Council Tuesday voted 4-3 against amending a city ordinance aimed at controlling the local (stray) cat population. Mayor Steve Gentling, and Councilmen Jim Case, Tracy Williams, and Brian Bothroyd voted against the measure, and Councilmen Jeff Taylor, Adam Ropp, and Grant Aguirre voted for the ordinance change.
