Lady Bluejays slow-pitch team goes 6-2 in busy week

Eight games in one week didn’t take its toll on Guthrie High’s slow-pitch softball team, which went 6-2 coming off of spring break.

The Lady Bluejays (6-4 overall) opened with a doubleheader sweep against Western Heights, 10-0 and 9-8. Ashlee Eichler (two home runs), Katelynn Siess (one home run), Ava Hebensperger, Saylor Hamilton and Ashayah Thirsty each had two hits in the opener.

In the second game, the Lady Bluejays allowed five runs in the first inning, but came back to score three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win. The Lady Jets out-hit Guthrie 15-12. Hebensperger and Riley Elz-Bade each had three hits, and Eichler, Shelbey Smedley and Hebensperger hit doubles.

The Lady Bluejays then traveled to Hennessey to get six games in over two days, going 4-2 in the tournament. Guthrie beat Luther 16-5 in the opener as Siess had two hits and five RBI. Codi Hibbs, Hebensperger, Siess and Elz-Bade all hit home runs.

Guthrie then run-ruled Okarche 14-2 in four innings. Siess had three hits. while Eichler, Hamilton and Elz-Bade each added two.

The Lady Bluejays would close out the first day with a 10-2 loss to eventual tournament champion Morrison. Guthrie had only six hits, including two doubles by Hebensperger.

The following day, Guthrie opened with an 11-7 win over the Crescent Lady Tigers. Hibbs and Thirsty each had three hits to spark a 17-hit attack. Ashlee Eichler had two hits and four RBI. Abbie Eichler and Smedley chipped in with two hits each.

Guthrie then run-ruled Chisholm 12-2 in four innings on 15 hits. Ashlee Eichler led the way with three hits and five RBI. Hebensperger, Hamilton, Abbie Eichler and Smedley all had two hits.

The Lady ‘Jays then surrendered 11 runs in the third inning to Perkins Tryon and dropped a 14-3 run-rule game to close out the tournament. Hamilton and Abbie Eichler had two hits each.

Guthrie has another busy week with games against Mustang and Crescent this week and a trip to the Jenks Festival on April 4.
