Guthrie wrestlers top 5A team in Yukon meet

Guthrie High School’s wrestling team wrapped up a busy week of action with a strong effort in the final major tournament of the year in Yukon at the Jay Hancock Memorial Tournament.

The Bluejays were the top Class 5A team, placing sixth with 140 points. Stillwater won the tournament with 319.5 points.

Guthrie’s Eli Kirk (132 pounds) finished second; Braden Hall (144) was third; Nic (285 pounds) and Kaedin Herendeen (106) placed fourth; and Bryson Hall (165) and Wesley Silvis (190) each took fifth.

Kirk (23-1) lost his first match of the season to Stillwater’s JJ McComas on a fall at 3:14 and finished 4-1 on the weekend with two falls, a major decision,and a decision.

Braden Hall (23-5) also went 4-1, losing in the semifinals to Kadence Roop of Broken Arrow 9-6. Hall had one fall, a major decision and two decisions, including a 3-1 win over Mitchel Borynack for third place.

Kaedin Herendeen went 3-2 with two decisions and a major decision, losing to Class 6A wrestlers from Stillwater and Westmoore. Herendeen is now 21-6.

Nic Herendeen lost in the quarterfinal round to Ricky Thomas of Edmond North and then finished with three straight wins in the consolation round before falling to Austin Spangler of Yukon 3-2.

Bryson Hall (22-10) went 5-2, winning his first two matches before losing in the quarterfinals to Kanon Futrell of Edmond North 10-4. Hall then won two consolation matches before losing in the consolation semifinals. He beat Rance Ridley of Choctaw 10-5 to claim fifth place.

Silvis (21-8) finished out the Bluejays scoring, going 4-2, losing in the quarterfinals and then coming through the consolation round. Silvis won the fifth-place spot on a medical forfeit by Luke Eschenhiemer of Cascia Hall.

Also participating: Allyn Orndorff (120), Matthew Jirous (126), Luke Lyons (132), Colby Wilder (138), Ryan Miller (150), Tyler Gettings (175), Waylen Castle (215), Eli Moroney (215) and Tikori Pierce (285).

Younger Guthrie wrestlers compete at Clinton Guthrie’s middle school and junior high wrestlers traveled to Clinton last weekend for their last big tournament of the year before the state meet.

Guthrie Junior High’s Ayden Smith won the 119-pound division, going 4-0, and posting a fall over Raden Berg (Hinton) in 1:47 in the championship match. Clayton Carey (126) was the other Bluejays champion, also going 4-0, and recording a fall over Christian Gipson (Woodward) at 4:00 in the final.

Colten Stevens (112) finished second with a 3-1 mark in the junior high division, losing in the final to Bryson Gordon of Watonga on a fall at 3:14. Rowan McHone (140) placed third with a fall over Kalib McFarland of Cache in 23 seconds to complete a 5-1 weekend.

Tate Simmons (170) finished fourth, battling through five straight wins after an opening setback. He lost the third-place match to Ryker Smith (Weatherford) on a 4-1 decision.

Aiden Hardin and Levi Dennis led the way for middle school wrestlers with 3-1 records for third-place finishes. Kyler Wilder (86 pounds) went 2-2 to claim fourth place.

Other participants included: Hudsen Wilson (86), Gavin Schults (92), Khonor Martin (98), Drake Nealis (106), Deeken Smith (106), Jonah Moroney (155), Logan Boling (119), Ayden Potter (132), Clark Huskey and Jason Tucker (155), and Sir William Morgan (195).

In the girls division, Ilamae Smith (155-165) went 2-0 to claim first place and Emma Fields placed third in her weight class. Kaydence Blevins (102) was sixth.

Madison Roach (102), Evie Boling, Bella Rose and Rylea Radford (110) did not place.

The wrestlers will celebrate Homecoming on Thursday night against Blanchard.
