Guthrie High School’s basketball teams each split a pair of games in Class 5A regional action, but both teams advanced to the area round this weekend.

On the boys side, the Bluejays defeated Lawton MacArthur 71-48. Nate Benford and Brayden Morgan led the way with 17 points each. Jaylen Chelf and Aiden Hardiman chipped in with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Jaylen Harper, Kyron Axtell and Corbin Witt combined for the other 10 points.

Guthrie shot 18-for-19 from the free throw line and made five 3-pointers.

The win set up a game with No. 1-ranked Carl Albert on Saturday night, but Guthrie came out cold, trailing 41-15 at the break on the way to a 72-49 loss. Morgan was the only player in double figures with 19 points. Benford and Chelf chipped in eight points each.

The Bluejays (11-14) now play No. 5 Piedmont (15-10) for the third time in four weeks on Friday night in Mustang at 7:30 to stay alive in the tournament. The winner of that game gets the loser of No. 3 El Reno (17-6) and No. 2 Del City (17-5) at 7:30 p.m. at Edmond North for the chance to advance to the state tournament.

On the girls side, the Lady Bluejays defeated Noble 52-41 in Piedmont to set up a rematch with Piedmont two days later, when they dropped a 52--43 decision to the Lady Wildcats. It was their third loss to them in two weeks.

The Lady Bluejays (1312) will play Guymon (149) at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night at Edmond North. The winner of that game gets the loser of No. 1 Carl Albert (20-5) and Glenpool (17-8) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Edmond North for a chance to advance to the state tournament. Guthrie has lost to both Glenpool and Carl Albert this season.
