Guthrie, OK - March 19, 2021 — Today the American Legion Post 58 released details of
their 2nd Vietnam War 50th Commemoration Ceremony. The date will be March 19th 6:30 PM -
8:00 PM. Post Commander Jerry Beranek, said “The night of ceremony is dedicated to our Post
members. Our plan includes a reception meet and greet with food and refreshments. We have
accommodations that allow us to follow the COVID social distancing. Vietnam War Veterans
will need to register and provide number of family members who plan on attending. Our goal is
to accommodate 15 war veterans.”
Who is eligible to receive the award?
According to Danny Thomas, Commandant of the Sooner Detachment 559, Oklahoma
City, OK, “The Vietnam Lapel Pin is presented on behalf of a grateful nation to living United
States veterans who served on active duty in the United States Armed Forces, at any time during
the period of November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location of service. Each veteran
is eligible to receive one lapel pin, receive a Lapel Pin Fact Sheet, and the Presidential
proclamation.”

The Vietnam War Recognition Act of 2017 enacted the National Vietnam War
Veterans Day, it now joins six other military-centric national observations. (Armed Forces Day,
Memorial Day, Independence Day, National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, Navy Day, and Veterans Day). March 29 was chosen to be observed in perpetuity, as March 29, 1973 was
the day Military Assistance Command (Vietnam) was disactivated.
