Guthrie Police Chief Named President of the Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police

At the conclusion of the Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Annual Meeting today, Guthrie Police Chief Don Sweger was named the new President of the Association. Chief Sweger has served on the OACP Executive Board since 2005 before rising to this top position. Sweger has been Chief in Guthrie for 8 years after serving in multiple capacities since starting his law enforcement career in 1994.

What’s old is new again in Guthrie with the opening of the Wander Inn, the official tasting room for the WanderFolk Spirits distillery. Situated in the space formerly occupied by Mack & Ike’s, the Wander Inn provides great drinks in the same classy atmosphere but with some new twists.

Guthrie High School Special Olympians

The Guthrie High School Special Olympians at their send-off on May 17 to Stillwater for the spring games through May 19. GHS sent over 50 athletes and coaches to the annual event. The Territorial Riders and Guthrie Police Department supplied the escort out of the city and to Stillwater. The GHS band, cheerleaders, and student body were all on hand as part of the sendoff ceremonies at the front of the high school.

Lions Club Donates to Guthrie Hope House

Recently the Guthrie Noon Lions Club honored the Guthrie Hope House with a supportive donation of $450. Lions President Steve Gentling saluted the work of the Hope House, noting that in three years of operation the organization has served over 600 men, women, and children. The short and long term programs provided by the Hope House serve the homeless, those battling substance abuse and victims of domestic violence. It has progressed to owing its own building with capacity to sleep over 50 clients as well as an industrial quality kitchen which generates meals for all who are in need of well- prepared food. Frankie Garcia, program administrator, explained to the Club the criteria for admission, the requirements to stay in the program (substance free) as well as the future direction. Natalie Cunningham, Women’s Fac i l i ty Dire c tor, expl ai n ed the various women focused programs and recent changes to facilitate the provision of service to women and children.

Mulhall-Orlando FFA Hosts Chapter Awards Banquet

On Saturday, May 6th the Mulhall-Orlando FFA Chapter hosted its annual awards banquet. We recognized individual and chapter achievements, and two members of our community were honored with the Honorary FFA Degree.

Memorial Day 2023, We Honor and Remember Our Fallen Heroes

Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day,” is observed on the last Monday of May each year. It is our day in the United States for mourning and honoring our U.S. military who died while serving our country. This coming Monday, May 29th, many of us will visit cemeteries, attend memorials, place flags on graves, join family and friends to observe the holiday, and begin looking forward to the start of Summer.
