Guthrie track teams double up in meets

Guthrie High’s track and field teams competed at the Bison Invitational in Shawnee and at the Carl Albert Invitational last week.

In the Shawnee meet, the girls finished third with 82.5 points, while the boys were fifth with 56.5. Mostly, the distance runners competed in the Carl Albert meet.

Among the top girls in the Shawnee meet: Cheyenne Gaymon, Mary Vaughan and Taylor Mays led the way in the 100-meter hurdles with second-, fourth- and fifth-place finishes. Gaymon ran 16.42, Vaughan 17.87 and Mays 19.12.

Gaymon took second in the 300 hurdles in 49.66; Mays ran 54.96 to finish fourth; and Chloe Sanders ran 55.68 to finish sixth.

Klaribel Kirk (2:41.03) and Kristie Botello (2:46.55) finished third and fourth in the 800. Jaidence Foster was seventh.

Anjewl Murillo was sixth in the 200 in 27.61.

Among the relays, the Lady Bluejays’ 4x400 placed second in 4:24.73. The girls also ran a second team that ran 4:49.27. Also, Guthrie was third in the 4x200 (1:51.29) and sixth in the 4x100 (52.39).

In the field events, Mary Vaughan and Lily Rechlin tied for fifth place in the high jump at 4-feet, 10 inches, and Alyanna Wallace came in seventh at 4-8.

In the pole vault, Alyssa Vaughan and Brooklyn Toomey each cleared 9-6 to finish in second and fourth place, respectively. Mary Vaughan finished sixth.

Among the top boys in the Shawnee meet: The 4x100-meter relay got the Bluejays off to a good start with a thirdplace finish in 44.45. The Bluejays got more points in the 4x200 with a fourth-place finish in 1:33.90, and the 4x400 relay closed out the running points with a third-place finish in 3:39.02.

Marshal Self (22.32) took second in the 200, with teammate Nate Benford (24.05) eighth.

Jaylen Chelf, Amare Watson, Zane Thomas, Chase Todd and Braydon Morgan all competed in the 100-meter dash but were out of the top six for team points.

Gideon Hiel and Lael Dreesen ran 17.10 and 17.75 in the 110 hurdles. Dreesen also ran in the 300 hurdles in 45.89 and Watson ran 48.29, unable to place in the top six.

In the field events, Justin Berryhill was second in the shot put and fifth in the discus for some valuable team points. Berryhill threw the discus 108-10.5 and the shot put 44-06 to wrap up Guthrie’s points.

Jalen Harper finished third in the high jump at 5-6.

Zeb Talley was sixth in the pole vault at 9-6, and Eli Yearout cleared 8-6.

Chelf competed in the long jump and finished with a 19-05.25 effort.

On April 7, a small contingent of Bluejays went to Carl Albert to compete in some distance races against bigger schools. Hannah Smith finished in fourth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.71. Kamryn Boller was sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:38.58.

Eli Fortney ran in the 800 for the Bluejays in 2:10.84, but was not in the top six. Lance Sallee (4:45.53), Isaiah Blevins (4:53.71) and Fortney (4:57.06) all ran in the 1,600.

Sallee then finished third in the 3,200 in a time of 10:15.24. Blevins was fifth in 10:27.19 and Corbin Madison finished in 11:25.31.
