For better or worse

Body
I’m a realist, right? That means I primarily care about what works and what doesn’t. American society has lots of things that don’t work right now. In fact, one of the things that annoys me most with the state of the country is not that so many things don’t work; rather, it’s that they don’t work and everyone just shrugs their shoulders and accepts the dysfunctional or even incompetent workings that go on around them every day.

"FAMILIES FALLING APART"

Generation Z. Young adults that older generations have a difficult time understanding. And a generation that, in turn, holds a lot of contempt for the lifestyles of generations before them.

Reflecting on my one year anniversary

Body
I was hanging out at the newspaper office today, when I came to a realization. I’ve been writing for the paper for a year now. In fact, after realizing I was getting close, I looked at my inbox, and checked the very first story I filed; I emailed it to our publisher on September 11, 2022. So that said, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on what I’ve done in my first year posing as a reporter.

Okie Realist - Balancing Historic Preservation

Body
This past week I took some time to watch the online replay of the July 3rd meeting of Guthrie’s Historic Preservation Commission. I normally wouldn’t, but someone in town mentioned that it was worth a watch, plus I need to get more acquainted with the various workings here in town.

The notion of community

Body
It seems that every locality these days is laser-locked on the concept of community, and especially how to “build” or “foster” it. I personally take issue with that notion, that a community can be “built” or “fostered” as though it is something that one simply assembles from the right pieces and set of instructions like the Lego sets I played with as a kid.

Letter to the editor

Body
Dear Editor, What can we do to make our neighborhoods safe for walking and playing? Dog attacks are happening too often in Guthrie. We know that there are laws and ordinances in place for our protection, but do they go far enough? On Friday, July 23rd, I was walking my dog.
