Lady Bluejays qualify for Class 5A softball tournament

It took the Guthrie Lady Bluejays softball team an extra game, but they are headed back to the Class 5A State Tournament next week in Oklahoma City at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The tournament starts Thursday.

The Lady Bluejays beat Altus 10-0 in the “if game” Thursday afternoon 10-0 to advance after getting stunned 2-1 in the first championship game.

Guthrie utilized a seven run second inning in the second game to secure the game 2 win, highlighted by a three-run home run by Ava Hebensperger. Mckenna Tucker got the win in the circle.

In the opener, Kinley Duehning was solid in the circle with 11 strikeouts, but a two-run homer by Altus in the bottom of the fourth inning was all they needed to post a win. Duehning only gave up three hits in six innings but two of them were in the critical fourth inning. Guthrie only had five hits in the game and hit into two double plays to limit their offense.

The brackets for next weekend will not be out until Monday as several teams are still in regional action. Piedmont has already qualified and will probably be the #1 seed going into OKC.

The News Leader will have the brackets and all the game story in next week's edition.
