Lorenz Family’s Little Free Library

Gracelynn and Nathan Lorenz were not expecting their youngest child to be born on the road.

Living in an Airstream RV can be an exciting and fast paced lifestyle, especially when you have a giant Great Dane and a small infant.

When young Helen Lorenz decided she wanted to go to school, they had a decision to make for their family; to continue life on the road or settle back down.

They had already settled down in OKC once to raise their elder, now grown children before moving into the RV for the next five years.

Guthrie had always had a special place in Gracelynn’s heart.

When she was a young driver she would save her gas money

Now the Lorenz family has their own piece of Guthrie history on 321 N. First Street.

They moved into their new home, built in 1904, in May 2021 and have been building and improving the estate since.

One of their additions is the Prairie Moon Little Free Library. In Sept. 2021. Gracelynn’s father-in-law built the library as a gift. As well as being completely personalized by the family, the name “Prairie Moon ‘’ comes from Gracelynn’s personal love of the book “Little House on the Prairie ‘’ as well as the special significance of the moon to the family and their marriage.

Her love of books, in general, is part of what inspired them to create the little library, and a want to connect with the Guthrie community over a mutual love of books.

“I thought it was a cool idea. I like the idea since we’re new to Guthrie. It’s a way of meeting people too,” Gracelynn said. They come by; we bump into them and have something in common, which is a love of books. Since we are coming into the community as newbies, it helps break the ice.”

Through the generosity of the community, the Lorenz family receives donations of books for the library, which they restock and refresh frequently. They try to keep a good variety of books for all age groups as well as genres’ for every kind of book lover.

Any leftover books are donated to the Friends of the Library group in Guthrie, where they are sold in the annual sale to benefit the Guthrie Public Library.

Anyone can create an official Little Free Library, with a one-time cost to their website for the charter number and sign for the library. Information about can be found at their website: littlefreelibrary.org The Prairie Moon Little Free Library is open and available 24/7 at 321 N. First Street.
