The Geezers, Gassers, and Hawgs Show and the Big Wheel Race will be filling up Oklahoma Avenue on April 16 starting at 5 p.m.
Former mayor Chuck Burtcher and Dan Newton started the car show. The Guthrie Rotary Club is the host. If you have never been to the show, it is a rare opportunity to see some nostalgic cars, so bring your cameras.
Anyone who wants to participate can either call Mike Sikes at 405-979-0346 or go to guthriegeezers@gmail.com to register. There is a $20 entry fee.
On the other side of Oklahoma Avenue, the Big Wheel Race has become one of the more entertaining events included in the ‘89er Days Celebration over the past five years. The Kiwanis Club invites children aged 3 to 7 to take part in their own special “Big Wheel Classic” on April 16 at 5 p.m.
“We start right up here at the Post Office mailboxes on the west side of the Post Office, and we go right down the street here in front of the News Leader office,” Kiwanis member Jerry Gammill said. “It’s really a great location because there is a slight hill there that makes it a little easier for the kids to pedal down.”
Children in the age group can line up and race multiple times. They will hold two or three controlled races before allowing the kids to have some free time to race on their own. Each child wil receive a miniature driver’s license for entering.
“This event is something we feel goes really well with the ’89er weekend and the Car Show,” Gammill said. “It really caters to the little kids. We’ve had 60 kids participate in the past, and it’s a really fun event for them.”
