Oklahoma Mourns the Passing of State’s Oldest Person

Guthrie’s own Ethel M. Bowens, who celebrated her 112th birthday on Aug. 26, 2021, passed away Tuesday morning, leaving behind an incredible legacy as a mother, wife and skilled homemaker, and a remarkable 136 descendants through extended families of her six children.

She also had the distinction of being named the oldest living Oklahoman when she turned 110 in 2019.

Bowens was born in Seward, Okla., and lived in Guthrie for more than 111 years. She was married to Volna Bowens on May 3, 1925 and they were happily united for 64 years until his passing on March 18, 1989.

After 17 years of marriage, they were blessed with their first child, Ethel Lorraine, followed soon thereafter by Romaine Teressa, Volna Theodore Jr., and Vernal Arvin. Then, seven years after the birth of their fourth child, and much to their surprise, Ethel and Volna welcomed twin daughters Clarice and Janice.

Bowens enjoyed raising her children, teaching them to cook, clean and do chores around the house. She was an excellent homemaker, cooking three meals a day for the family, and often caught the main course herself.

From chickens and guineas to turkeys, ducks, hogs and cows, their farm had it all. She was known for taking pride in such things as gardening, canning food and making jellies, as well as selling milk, cream and eggs from the farm. She also was skilled in sewing clothes for her children.

Bowens was a resident of Golden Age Nursing Home since 2016. She was known for giving sage advice, having a wonderful sense of humor and enjoying visits with her family members.

To date, Bowens’ six children have generated 136 lineal descendants, which include 29 grandchildren, 55 greatgrandchildren and 52 great great-grandchildren, who will cherish her memory.
