Guthrie High’s Lady Bluejays basketball team started off 2023 in a celebratory fashion, winning the Noble Tournament this past weekend by claiming three victories in three days.
In the championship game against McAlester, Guthrie needed to rally from a 14-6 deficit in the first quarter and a 25-16 deficit at halftime by scoring 17 points in the third and fourth quarters to win 50-43.
The Lady Bluejays converted 15 of their 21 free throws.
Anjewl Murillo led the way with 20 points and Ania Morgan had 10 points.
Murillo was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament and Morgan was named to the All- Tournament Team.
The Lady ‘Jays opened the tournament with a 52-33 win against Mount Saint Mary, turning a 1513 lead after the first quarter into a 31-22 lead at the half. Murillo accounted for 17 of the Lady Bluejays 31 points in the first half.
Braydin Russell scored 12 points; Mariah Dightman scored 7; and Morgan added 5.
In the semifinals against tournament host Noble, the Lady Bluejays trailed 24-22 at the half, and then scored 20 points in the third quarter to take a 42-41 lead into the final quarter.
Murillo again was clutch, scoring 8 of her team-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to secure the 58-51 win.
Dightman and Morgan each chipped in 10 points, while Kynlee Smedley hit three baskets from beyond the arc for 9 points. Russell added six points.
The Lady Bluejays (63) are on the road again this week on Friday at El Reno and at Shawnee next week.
