Guthrie High’s Lady Bluejays cross country team bounced back from a disappointing regional meet and finished third in the Class 5A state championships on Oct. 29 in Edmond.
Guthrie (6-16-18-21-26) finished with 87 points; Piedmont (2-7-8-9-15) won the title with 41 points. Bishop Kelley (14-13-14-40) was second with 72.
Junior Kamryn Boller led Guthrie with a time of 19:44.96 over the 3.5-mile course for a sixth-place scoring finish and seventh place overall.
Junior Hannah Smith finished a minute behind her teammate with a time of 20:44.76, good for 15th place in team scoring and 17th place overall.
Sophomores Peyton Read and Raley Hooper finished in 15th and 18th place, respectively, in team scoring and 19th and 23rd place overall with times of 20:50.76 and 20:59.34.
Newcomer Klaribel Kirk was the final scorer for the Lady Bluejays in 26th place, and 30th overall, in 21:13.45.
Freshman Kristie Botello and junior Cameron Ireton also ran for the Lady Bluejays but were not among the scoring totals. There were 111 girls in the race and 14 teams represented.
Bluejays ninth in Class 5A boys
Guthrie High’s boys cross country team had a tough day at the Class 5A state championships and finished ninth (10-2438-62-93) with 227 points in the team standings.
Piedmont won the title (1-23-13-32) for 51 points, 40 points better than Bishop Kelley (4-1617-23-31).
Guthrie senior Lance Sallee covered the 3.5-mile course in 16:36.34 for a 10th-place scoring finish (11th overall).
Mason Mayer, coming off an individual regional championship, finished in 30th place overall and 24th in team scoring. Mayer finished with a time of 17:14.39, which was over a minute behind champion Reese Fricke’s winning time of 15:57.21.
Junior Terry Beckett finished 48th overall and 38th in team scoring with a time of 17:42.14. Junior Eli Fortney was 73rd overall and 62nd in team scoring in 18:05.89. Senior Tyler Waggoner finished 107th overall and 93rd in team scoring.
There were 117 runners in the race and 14 teams represented. in the state meet.
