The Guthrie High School track teams battled the wind all day April 29 in Piedmont for the Suburban Conference meet but still came away with some impressive performances in the meet. The girls finished in third place and the boy’s team in fourth place in the varsity meet. In the ninth grade meet both teams finished in fourth place.
The boys got their day started with a first place finish in the 4 x100 meter relay edging Carl Albert 44.11 to 44.46. Mason Tilley, Tyrin Eaton, Alex Juarez, and Jaylen Chelf made up the team for the Bluejays.
The Lady Bluejays 4 x 800 meter relay team battled hard but could not catch a very solid Piedmont team who won the race in 10:23.92, while Guthrie finished in third place with a time of 11:06.27 as Hannah Smith, Raley Hooper, Kamryn Boller, and Peyton Read represented the Lady Bluejays in the race.
The Bluejays would finish in fourth place in their 4 x 800 meter relay in 9:01.55 as Piedmont won the race in 8:34.34. Dawson Sallee, Tyler Waggoner, Jaxon Harden, and Mason Mayer represented the Bluejays.
In the 100 meter hurdles races, the Lady Bluejays took first place in the ninth grade race with Mary Vaughn (18.76)-Picture, and Cheyenne Gaymon continuing her great spring with a winning time of 17.07. Jadora Jennings finished in sixth place for Guthrie in 19.43. In the 300-meter hurdles races, Vaughn would finish in second place with a time of 55.69 and Gaymon would win the varsity race in a time of 47.79.
In the boys’ 110 meter hurdles the Bluejays ran 3-4 as Gideon Hiel edged Lael Dressen 18.04-18.34 for those places. Adonis Neal of Del City won the race in 16.49. in the 300-meter race for the ninth graders, Guthrie’s Dayton Hoaglin would finish in second place with a time of 52.58. Dressen would edge Hiel in the varsity race 46.04-46.41 for a second and third place finish for the Bluejays.
The Bluejays were well represented in the 100-meter race as Gregory Stevenson finished fourth in the ninth grade race and Jaylen Chelf (11.79) second place finish edged out teammate Tilley (11.83) for a fourth place finish. (Pictures)
. In the 200-meter race for the ninth graders Stevenson would finish in fifth place.
The 3200 meter run gave the sprinters a break as Lance Sallee (11:11.33) and Waylon Ball (12:13.33) would finish in sixth and seventh places in a race won by Coby Ferbrache of Piedmont in 10:18.26.
The 4 x 200 meter relays were next on the schedule and both Guthrie teams took third place in their respective races. The Lady Bluejays (1:51.68) finished just behind Del City (1:48.83) and Piedmont (1:51.65). The quartet of Alyana Wallace, Anjewl Murillo, Sara Smith, and Gaymon led the way for the Lady Bluejays.
In the Bluejays race, the quartet of Tilley, Chelf, Juarez, and Eaton ran a solid 1:34.71 but could not catch Del City (1:31.69).
The 800-meter race had Gracie Ball (2:54.82) and Riley Wilkerson (2:28.58) finish in third place in their ninth grade races. In the Lady Bluejays 800 meter race, Maddie Bishop (2:43.42) finished in third place and Hooper (2:47.61) finished in fifth place for Guthrie.
In the 400-meter races, the ninth grade boy’s race had Zeb Talley finishing in fourth place (1:01.69). In the girls’ race, Murillo won the race in 1:01.80 with Read in fourth place at 1:09.09. The Bluejays had Landen Dixon (55.09) and Kyran Axtel (55.62) finishing in fifth and sixth place in the race for Guthrie. In the girls 200-meter race, Sara Smith and Brooklyn Toomey would finish in fifth and seventh places in the race.
The 1600 meter races wrapped up the individual races and saw Guthrie with good representation as Wilkerson was in third place in the boy’s ninth grade race with teammate Maddox O’Brien in fifth place. Hannah Smith would finish in fifth place in the varsity girl’s race with teammate Maddie Bishop in sixth place. Mayer (4:54.75) would finish in fourth place behind double winner Ferbrache of Piedmont who ran 4:38.11 to win the race. Eli Fortney would finish in seventh place in the race.
The 4X400 meter relays were the last running events of the day, with the Lady Bluejays coming home in second place in a time of 4:23.58. The quartet of Read, Sara Smith, Gaymon, and Murillo could be a formidable challenge in Ponca City this Saturday. The Bluejays quartet of Axtel, Juarez, Dixon, and Dawson Sallee finished in fourth place with a time of 3:47.60.
Both teams have a chance to pick up valuable points and state qualifiers in the field events this year. In the high jump, Vaughn finished in second place for the ninth graders at 4’6” and Wallace finished in fifth place at the varsity girl’s meet at 4’8”.
Vaughn then won the girls’ ninth grade pole vault at 7’6” and Toomey was second in the varsity girls’ event at 9’6”. Alyssa Vaughn (7’0) and Savanah Rodriguez (6’6”) would finish in fourth and fifth places for the Lady Bluejays. In the boys’ ninth grade event Talley, and Hoaglin each cleared 9’6” to go 1-2 and O’Brien cleared 9’00 to finish in third.
Over at the long jump pit with the wind being an issue all day, Stevenson had a second place finish for the ninth grade boys, Jennings was third for the varsity girls and Bishop was in fifth place for the Lady Bluejays. Chelf would finish off the day with a third place finish at 20’11”, six inches behind two Del City athletes.
The Bluejays will travel to Ponca City Saturday for one of four 5A track regionals. Guthrie will be competing against Shawnee, Glenpool, McAlester, Collinsville, Bishop Kelly, and Bishop McGuiness that will all offer stout competition for those precious state qualifying spots. The state meet is in Ardmore the next weekend.
