Bluejays beat Yukon to finish third at Weatherford

Guthrie High’s boys basketball team posted a 2-1 record to claim third place in the Weatherford Tournament.

The Bluejays (4-5) now have a trip to No. 4 El Reno (9-1) on Friday night.

Guthrie opened the tournament by beating Elgin 57-45. Nate Benford led the way with 19 points and seven rebounds. Braydon Morgan chipped in with 18 points, including four baskets from 3-point range, and seven assists. Senior Jaylen Chelf tallied 10 points and Jaylen Harper added 8.

In the semifinals, the Bluejays dropped a 6253 decision to Tuttle, alhough Benford continued his hot shooting with an 18-point game, converting all eight free throws. Harper chipped in 11 points.

There were 40 fouls called in the game; Guthrie was whistled 24 times.

Garret Redwine torched Guthrie for 27 points and went 14-for-16 from the free throw line. Tuttle shot 61% from the field while Guthrie shot 31%.

In the third-place game, the Bluejays rebounded for a 57-47 win against the Class 6A Yukon Millers. Morgan led the way with 15 points and five rebounds. Corbin Witt chipped in with 14 points and Chelf had 9.

The Bluejays shot 45% from the field on 20-for-44 shooting. Guthrie also was 15-for-19 from the free throw line.

After Friday night’s game at El Reno, the Bluejays travel to Shawnee on Jan. 17 and to the Kingfisher Tournament on Jan. 19-21 before returning for some home games.
