Bluejays basketball teams dispose of Daniel Webster in home opener routs

The Guthrie High School basketball teams finally got to play at home on Dec. 17 and while both teams handily defeated Daniel Webster in their games, it was pretty ugly as to the quality of the play from the Tulsa team.

In the Lady Bluejays game it was 33-0 before Daniel Webster scored a bucket and it was 39-4 at the half. The teams played a running clock in the second half as the Lady Bluejays would go on to post a 55-7 win. Everyone got to play for the Lady Bluejays as the game took 61-minutes to play.

Kyra Wheeler led all scorers with 12 points as nine players scored in the game. Anjewl Murillo, Kynlee Smedley, and Madi Jones all chipped in with eight points.

The Lady Bluejays will travel to Choctaw on Dec. 28-30 for the Lady Jacket Classic. Guthrie drew Class 6A Owasso in the first game at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 28. Moore and Lawton Eisenhower are in the other half of the Blady Bluejays bracket. Besides tournament host Choctaw, Santa Fe South, Ardmore, and Shawnee are on the other side of the draw.

In the Bluejays 82-52 win over Daniel Webster there were 43 personal fouls called, with 25 on the visitors and 18 on Guthrie. There were 56 free throws shot with Guthrie 25-for-30 in the game and the visitors were 17-for-26 in the game. The Bluejays defense gave the home team some easy buckets in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 17-4 lead. It was still 38- 24 at the half in favor of the Bluejays. The second half started getting a little chippy as Daniel webster kept trying to press the Bluejays despite being down 20-25 points until the end of the game. The Bluejays were 12-for-15 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter while Daniel Webster was 10-for- 13 from the charity stripe.

Guthrie made 21 field goals compared to seven for the visitors, while the visitors made two more 3-pointers (7-5) than the Bluejays in the game. Nine different Bluejays scored in the game led by Alex Clark with 20 points. Ryder Franz and Brayden Morgan had 14 points each and Jaylen Chelf had 13 points in the game. Trey Davis of Daniel Webster led all scorers with 26 points.

The referees used really good discretion in dealing with the Daniel Webster Coach as they could have easily given him several technical fouls for his sideline behavior and the Guthrie players despite the 18 fouls were not baited into anything that would have gotten them in trouble despite the visitors’ style of play.

The Bluejays (4-1) have two weeks off before they go to Shawnee on Jan. 4 and then to the Weatherford Tournament on Jan. 6-8. The Bluejays return home Jan. 14 against El Reno for Homecoming.
