Guthrie soccer sweeps Del City

Both the GHS boys’ and girls’ soccer teams picked up statement wins over a 5A-2 district rival Monday evening.

Guthrie welcomed the Del City Eagles to town for a double header showdown, kicked off by a 3-0 shutout victory for the Lady Jays that saw freshman forward Ally Carey score all three goals, all in the first half. Guthrie’s back line played a lockdown defensive game and made goal keeper Kendall Farris‘ life easy, keeping the action mostly in the Eagles’ half.

The Lady Jays improve to 3-4 on the year and are now winners of two in-a-row after defeating Capitol Hill on Friday.

Immediately following the girls’ win was the Guthrie boys’ contest, which ended in a 9-1 rout in favor of the home team. Alejandro Sanchez and Angel Cazares-Lopez opened up the scoring with goals in the 12th and 21st minute, respectively, before the Bluejays ran away with it in the second half for their third win of the year.

Coach Michael Horn’s group bounces back from last Friday’s home loss to Capitol Hill and is now 3-5 overall.

Up next, both Guthrie squads make a road trip to Foley, Alabama, to compete in the Southern Coast Cup on Friday, April 4.
