The Bluejays showed no quarter against lowly Southeast on Monday, taking the varsity doubleheader by a combined score of 42-1 at Squires Field.
Game One featured Guthrie as the home team, and they wasted no time, posting six runs in the first inning on seven walks, a hit batter, an error, and just one single. In the second, the bottom of the Guthrie lineup went three up, three down, but the Bluejays were back at it in the third, posting 8 more runs off of five Southeast errors, two more walks, two hit batters, and just one more single. After adding seven more runs in the 4th, Guthrie closed out the 21-0 run-rule in four and a half innings. The Bluejays emptied the bench, with nearly every player on the roster getting a chance in the field and at the plate.
Luke Hubbard and Brent Ingle threw a combined no-hitter, with Hubbard getting the win. Together they struck out 10 batters and gave up only two walks. In perhaps the most bizarre box score one might see, the final line for Guthrie was 21 runs scored on only three official hits. Gabriel Granados took the loss for the Spartans.
In Game Two, there was very little difference in play, though Southeast did manage a single hit and one run, scored in the last inning on a steal of home by Southeast’s Timothy Park; Park got on base when he was hit by Carson Ireton, then stole second and moved to third on Ireton’s wild pitch. The Bluejays kept up their offensive ways, posting seven runs in the first inning and twelve in the second. Guthrie earned more of their runs than in Game One, scoring their 21 total runs on 12 hits and getting the 21-1 five-inning run rule.
Zach Henry earned the win, allowing one walk to Southeast and combining with freshman Hayden Clymer and Ireton to strike out 11 Spartan hitters. Clymer gave Southeast their lone hit, and Ireton allowed Park’s run. Julio Guzman pitched all four innings for Southeast and took the loss, but as a bright spot for the beleaguered Spartans, he gave up no walks, though he did hit 9 Guthrie batters.
