There were plenty of reasons to celebrate at Guthrie High’s Homecoming game Friday night.
The Bluejays (3-0), sparked by senior Isaiah Hammons’ 50-yard run down the sidelines two minutes into the game and 114 yards rushing on 23 carries, rolled to a 54-7 win against the Duncan Demons (0-2).
Senior Jaylen Chelf also had a big night with three touchdowns , one on a 9-yard reception and another from 22 yards.
Junior quarterback Hayden Calvert scored in the first quarter on a 45yard touchdown run and piled up 109 yards rushing on 12 carries to go along with a 12-for-24 passing night for 122 yards and three touchdowns.
Guthrie was leading 14-0 with 1:45 left in the first half when Chelf got his first score of the game. The Bluejays also added a score with 3 seconds to go on a Calvert-to-Tyrin Eaton pass to make it 28-0 at halftime.
Chelf scored twice in the second half to make it 41-7 before Alexander Clark scampered 64 yards for a score and Jaylen Harper returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal it.
Guthrie’s defense had its third stellar game of the year, allowing only 1 rushing yard on 28 attempts and 103 total yards. The offense, meanwhile, ran the ball 47 times for 344 yards and had another 127 passing yards for 471 yards in total offense.
The big test for the Bluejays is Friday night, when they travel down Interstate 44 to Tuttle, the 2021 defending Class 4A state champion in their last non-district game of the season. The Class 4A fifthranked Tigers (2-0) beat Class 5A Noble 61-41 on Friday night with over 300 yards of rushing between two running backs on 40 carries.
