The Guthrie High School track teams traveled to Ponca City on April 14 to participate in the Jerry Runyan Relays. Both teams finished in third place as Class 6A Stillwater won the boys’ meet with 155 points while Guthrie had 122 points. The Bluejays even entered a “B” team in some events, and they finished in sixth place overall. The Lady Bluejays for the second time this month had to contend with Class 6A Edmond Memorial and finished with 72 points while Edmond Memorial won the meet with 249 points.
Mason Mayer was one of two individual champions in Ponca City as he led a 1-2-5-8 finish for the Bluejays in the 16+00-meter race. Mayer won with a time of 4:47.55 with teammate Tyler Waggoner right behind at 4:49.89. Lance Sallee (4:55.48) and Jaxon Harden (5:02.17) rounded out an impressive effort by the Bluejays distance runners.
Lael Dressen was the other individual champion as he won the 300-meter hurdle race in 45.15 with teammate Gideon Hiel in fifth place at 47.42. Dressen would finish in fourth place in the 100-meter hurdle race with a time of 18.08, while Hiel would run 17.77 to finish in third place.
The relay events can get teams a lot of points in meets and this meet was no exception for the Blujays teams. The day started with the 4 x 100 meter race with the Lady Bluejays in fourth place at 57.77 as Emond Memorial won in 49.05. Cheyenne Gaymon, Anjewl Murillo, Haley Gallo, Sara Smith Jadora Jennings, and Alyana Wallace are the Guthrie representatives on the team. all make up the team. The same team members are part of the 4 x 200 meter relay team that finished in fourth place in 1:52.78 behind Bartlesville and Edmond Memorial who ran 1:47.2 and 1:47.51 respectively to finish 1-2.
The 4 x 800 meter girls’ team finished in third place with a time of 10:53.25 finishing behind two Edmond Memorial relay teams. Kamryn Boller, Peyton Read, Hannah Smith, Maddie Bishop, and Raley Hooper are the runners that make up the team. The Lady Bluejays 4 x 400 meter relay team finished in second place behind Edmond Memorial, with a time of 4:24.75 while the Lady Bulldogs won the race in 4:07.23.
Besides doing relays, Gaymon finished in fifth place in the 100-meter hurdle race (17.41) and in third place (48.59) in the 300-meter race. Teammate Mary Vaughn would finish in sixth place in the 100-meter hurdle race in 18.44.
In the field events, Wallace would clear 5’0” for a second place finish in the high jump, and Brooklyn Toomey would clear 9’06” in the pole vault to finish in third place.
Murillo would finish in fourth place in the 400-meter race in 1:02.06 and Hannah Smith would finish in sixth place in the 1600-meter race in 6:28.74 to close out the Lady Bluejays scoring.
The Bluejays also got valuable relay points with a second place and three third places in the various relay events. The 4 x 800 meter relay team finished in second place behind Bartlesville in a time of 8:43.71. Mayer Waggoner, Harden, Lance Sallee and Dawson Sallee were members of this team. The Bluejays also entered a second team and they finished in third place. Eli Fortney, Waylon Ball, Lance Sallee, and Ryan Sylestine were part of that team.
The Bluejays also entered two teams in the 4 x 100 meter relay race, and they finished third and fourth in the race. The “A” team ran a 45.16, while the “B” team ran a 46.42 in the race. Mason Tilley, Tyrin Eaton, Alex Juarez, Kyran Axtel, Deandre Jones, Jalen Harper, Alex Clark, and Nate Benford were listed as the various runners for Guthrie. The same group was involved in the third and fourth place finishes in the 4 x 200 meter relay race with times of 1:35.15 and 1:37.97.
The Bluejays final relay event, the 4 x 400 meter relay team finished in third place in 3:45.75 with many of the distance runners from the 4 x 800 group involved in the race.
Landon Dixon would finish in third place in the 400-meter race and Juarez would finish in sixth place in the 200-meter race for the Bluejays.
Tilley wrapped up the points for the running events with fourth place finishes in the 100-meter and 200-meter races with times of 11.34 and 23.41 respectively.
In the field events Jalen Harper would finish in sixth place in the high jump at 5’6” edging out teammate Deandre Jones. In the pole vault, the Bluejays three freshman would finish 3-4- 5 in the event. Kade Bostick of Bartlesville would win the event clearing 13’0”. Zeb Talley (9’06”), Dayton Hoaglin (8’06”), and Maddox Obrien (8’0”) would continue their progression on the year in the event.
The Bluejays have some specialized meets this weekend before heading for Piedmont for the Suburban conference Meet and regionals.
