Inaugural Clay Tarter meet brings cross country back to Cottonwood Flats

It has been a long four years since Guthrie High’s crosscountry teams hosted a meet at Cottonwood Flats, but this Friday a new tradition begins.

The inaugural Clay Tarter Invitational, held in honor of the late coach, will be held in Guthrie. Tarter was an icon among the cross country and track programs for over 40 years before passing away unexpectedly last summer.

Tarter’s teams produced nine state titles. He also coached four state champion athletes, three Academic State Championship teams, and had 14 state runnerup finishes.

Over the years, Tarter earned numerous honors, including: Guthrie High’s Teacher of the Year (1983, 2005, 2007); Oklahoma Cross Country Coach of the Year (1993, 2003); the Guthrie Athletic Hall of Fame induction (1994); National High School Coaches Association’s Regional Cross Country Coach of the Year (2008); the Oklahoma Track Coaches Hall of Fame induction (2010); and the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s Cross Country Coach Come join us for the Logan County Fall Free Fair this weekend. Entries for indoor events are Wednesday September 6th from 5-7 pm and Thursday September 7th from 8-10 am with judging to follow on the 7th. Friday from 9:00 am- 8:00 pm the educational building will be open to the public to view the hard work of those that competed. From 4:00-7:00 Pm come by and check out the 4-H interactive demos as well. On Saturday the 9th the educational building will be open to the public from 9:00 am-2:30 pm.

For outdoor shows the farmhand Olympics will begin at 5:30pm on Thursday September 7th. Check-in for the livestock show is at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 8th at the livestock arena. The rabbit and poultry checkin is from 6-7 pm with the show to follow on the 8th. On Saturday the 9th at the livestock arena will be our fall livestock show where you can watch the youth of Logan County exhibit their animal.
