The Cashion basketball teams had a busy week last week playing Dale, Wellston and Thomas Fay-Custer on consecutive nights. The Wildcats are 10-1 after winning all three games, and the LadyCats are 9-4 after going 2-1 during the week.

The County Line Tournament starts Thursday morning in Cashion. The tournament is loaded this year with the boys’ bracket having Dale, the number one seed and top-ranked team in Class 2A heading the field. Second-seed Cashion will open with a game against Perry (8-5) in the nightcap Thursday night. Varnum, the top-ranked team in Class B, is in the field as the fourth seed and could possibly play Dale in the semifinals if the seeding holds on the Thursday games.

Vanoss, the seventhranked team in Class A, is in the bracket opposite Cashion, but they drew Class 4A Clinton in the opening round.

The Wildcats were extended to double overtime in the 60-59 win over Dale on Jan. 14, as Vance Raney (22 points), Jonah Jenkins (16 points) and Austin Frazier (10 points) were in double figures for the Wildcats. Wellston then took the Wildcats to overtime on Jan.15 before the ‘Cats pulled away for the 57-52 win. Raney (18 points), Jenkins (17 points) and Frazier (13 points) were the go-to guys in the game. The Saturday night game was closer than the final score indicated, as Thomas led 28-27 at the half and the Wildcats would then go on a 21-10 run in the third quarter to take the lead for good and post a 66-55 win. The Wildcats got double figure scoring from Landon LaGasse (16 points), Frazier (16 points), Jenkins (15 points) and Raney (11 points) to lead the team to its 12th win of the year.

The Cashion LadyCats will be the fourth seed on the girls’ side of the bracket and will play Perry (10-3) in the Thursday night girls’ finale at 7 p.m. Vanoss, the top-ranked Class A team, is the first seed on the girls side, and the top-ranked team in class Class 2A Dale is the second seed in the tournament. Varnum, the third-ranked Class B team, is also in the tournament.

The LadyCats’ week started out with a 54-33 loss to Dale on Jan. 14. Lauren Jenkins led the way with 13 points for the LadyCats. Cashion bounced back with a 51-31 win over Wellston on Jan. 15, as Brook Shelly led the scoring with 13 points. The LadyCats led 21-9 at the half and then outscored Wellston 15-2 in the third quarter to secure the win.

The LadyCats got 13 points from Lauren Lamb and 11 points from Neeley Tilley Bedick to finally post the 35-26 win on Saturday.

The tournament wraps up on Saturday. All teams will play three games in three days, which could prove to be a good test for teams as the playoffs approach.
