The Guthrie High School Golf team took home third place in the Class 5A state golf tournament on May 10- 11 at the Meadowbrook Country Club in Tulsa.

The Bluejays shot a 991 (318-324-349) over the three rounds of competition behind state champion Bishop Kelly’s score of 928 (307-300- 321) with Duncan in third place with a score of 957 (303-317-337).

Senior Brady Hirzel led the Bluejays with a fifth-place individual finish with a score of 234 (73-78-83), 23 shots behind Parker Payne of Noble who shot a 211 (70-66-75) over the three rounds to claim the individual title.

Jaret Dean finished 17th overall with a score of 246 (76-76-94) and was the Bluejays’ second finisher.

Jaxson Hirzel and Beau Dale shot a 258 (90- 84-84) and a 260 (84-88-88) respectively to round out the Bluejays scoring. Senior Mason Barney took enough time away from the track to shoot a 270 (85-86-99). There were 74 golfers in the field.

The Bluejays qualified for the state meet after finishing second in the regional to Bishop Kelly at Pryor Creek earlier in the month.

“Overall, the state tournament went like the season,” coach Ric Meshew said. “Bishop Kelly and Duncan were always ahead of us. We were a top three team all season, and that is the way it shook out last week. Brady Hirzel was an All-State qualifier because of his finish and get to represent the west in the All-State tournament against the East this summer. The guys worked hard to get to where we got.”
