Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association member schools have approved seven changes to four OSSAA rules, with the changes taking effect July 1, 2027.
The changes are part of an ongoing effort to promote consistency, fairness and safety while keeping academics a priority for students participating in school activities.
The changes were developed by the 16-member Rules Review Committee, which is reviewing all 24 OSSAA rules in batches. The OSSAA Board of Directors approved the committee’s recommendations for a vote by all 484 member schools.
The approved changes include:
• Scholastic eligibility (Rule 3, Section 1-A): Students must pass all classes from the previous semester, rather than five subjects.
• Regaining eligibility (Rule 3, Section 1-B): Academically ineligible students may regain eligibility after three weeks of passing all classes, instead of six weeks.
• Senior eligibility (Rule 3, Section 3-A): Seniors must pass all classes to remain eligible, rather than only classes required for graduation.
• Summer school credit (Rule 3, Section 3-D): Students may use up to two summer school credits toward eligibility requirements, instead of one.
• Student organization eligibility (Rule 4, Section 3): Removes a provision concerning organizations that violate state law or local school board regulations.
• Dual residence (Rule 8, Section 7): Allows a one-time exception for families moving into a new district while maintaining their primary residence in their home district, subject to a waiver and eligibility requirements.
• Link Rule (Rule 24): Allows an exception for students returning to their home district while continuing to prohibit participation in the same sport at two schools during the same year.
The Rules Review Committee will continue meeting through December to review the remaining rules and recommend additional changes.
