The Guthrie Sooner Post 4578 of Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a celebration dinner in honor of Vietnam Veterans Day this Friday, March 29th starting at 6:30pm. It will be held at the VFW Post building at 5223 S. Division. The menu for the dinner will feature ribs, side dishes, desserts, and drinks. Admission will be $15 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under. Vietnam vets will eat for free, in recognition of their service.

Friday will be Vietnam Veterans Day, which was established in 2017 by the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump. It is recognized as a national observance dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who served in that conflict, in acknowledgment of the valor and sacrifice.

The statistics speak volumes of the contribution and the heavy toll it took on those who served. Over 9 million individuals responded to their nation’s call during this tumultuous period, with more than 6 million of these veterans still among us today. Notably, 2.7 million of these individuals had their boots on the ground in Vietnam. The cost was steep, with over 58,000 heroes laying down their lives and more than 304,000 sustaining injuries.

The significance of Vietnam Veterans Day extends beyond mere recognition; it serves as a collective moment of reflection and appreciation for the indomitable spirit and dedication of these servicemen and women.

Mayor Steve Gentling, himself a Vietnam Era veteran and a member of American Legion Post 58 in Guthrie, made the following statement to the News Leader in anticipation of Friday’s observance: “To ALL veterans and their families, I extend a heartfelt ‘Thank You.’ On March 29, I stand united with the citizens of Guthrie, America, in offering a special salute and expression of deep appreciation to the Vietnam Veterans and their families who are with us today.”

The Guthrie News Leader honors our Vietnam veterans, their valor, their courage, and their sacrifice.
