Guthrie resident Mary Grace Hurley Westbrook will turn 101 this July, and the upcoming 89er Celebrations in Guthrie provide a perfect opportunity to honor a life that represents Guthrie’s true historical pioneer spirit, with local history and a dedication to family.

Born at her parents’ home in Guthrie in 1923, Mary Grace was the first child of Walter Merle Hurley and Velma Jewel Cook Hurley. Her family’s roots in Guthrie run deep. Her grandfather, Joseph John Hurley, participated in the Land Run of 1889, establishing a family homestead that continues to be a part of their story. Her father, Walter, served in the Marines during World War I before returning home to marry Velma and open Hurley Plumbing on Second Street, a business that remains in operation today under the helm of Ted Hurley.

Mary Grace’s childhood unfolded just two blocks from her current residence. Memories of the Dust Bowl include walking home from school with a damp cloth pressed against her mouth to ward off the dust. Despite the challenges, her life in Guthrie was enriched by community. She graduated from Guthrie High School in 1941, where she was chosen as Homecoming Queen. She later married Russell Westbrook, and together they raised four children – Paul, David, Diane, and Raman – all of whom followed in their mother’s footsteps and graduated from Guthrie High School.

Mary Grace’s professional life was equally engaged with the community. She held positions with Dale Cook, Merle Smith, and even served as a court reporter for Judge Mildred Patterson. This role brought her face-to-face with many of Guthrie’s notable citizens, both celebrated and infamous. Mary Grace’s dedication to confidentiality meant her children’s attempts to pry loose stories about the town’s more colorful characters proved futile.

Even at 101, Mary Grace remains a vibrant part of the Guthrie community. She tackles the daily crossword puzzle in the Oklahoman and religiously tunes in to Jeopardy. Her greatest pride lies in her extensive family, consisting of 36 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Her home has always been, and continues to be, a cornerstone for family gatherings, with Christmas morning breakfasts holding a special place in their traditions.

Mary Grace Hurley Westbrook and her life clearly deserve the honor she receives as part of Guthrie’s annual crowning event. Her story weaves together over a century of local history, showcasing a deep connection to family and a community that thrives on togetherness. As Guthrie celebrates its heritage during the 89er Celebrations, Mary Grace serves as a reminder of the enduring strength of its people, the bond we all share here in the community, and the importance of preserving its rich history.
