Guthrie wrestling's first dual back from winter break ended in a road loss to top-ranked Class 3A squad, Blackwell, Monday night.
The Bluejays lost their third dual of this season by a score of 67-4 after picking up just one match victory on the night. Coach Jadon Davenport’s team is now 2-3 in duals after starting the season with wins over Perry and Comanche.
Blackwell featured seven wrestlers who are currently ranked top five in their respective weight class in Class 3A, including three No. 1 guys. Joel Landry fell victim to one of those top-ranked wrestlers in Blackwell’s Garrett Short, who won by tech fall (18-2) in the opening 106-pound match.
Urijah Sisk was pinned by Kole Hetrick in the 113, then Kaedin Herendeen suffered just his second loss of the season after top-ranked Louden Wolfe beat him by 2-1 decision in the 120. Herendeen is the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the 5A 120 whose only other loss came at Choctaw on Dec. 17.
Blackwell took a 25-0 advantage after Madden Edgar won by tech fall in the 126 over Ayden Smith, then Saben Batten pinned Matt Mihalik in the 132. The Bluejays’ struggles continued in the 138-pound match as Luke Lyons was outmatched by Blackwell’s Payton Head, who won by major decision, 15-2, to give the Maroons a 29-0 lead.
Guthrie’s first and only match victory Monday came in the 175-pound event. After dropping the 144, 150, 157 and 165 matches, Bryson Hall finally got the Jays on the board by picking up a tech fall over Lane Looper, making it 51-4, Blackwell.
Blackwell would go on to take the final three matches thanks to a 13-2 decision win by Jason Osgood over Roston Uselton and a forfeit in the 215. Stoney Hudson capped off the night by pinning Guthrie’s Sir William Morgan in just nine seconds to win the heavyweight bout. Blackwell won 67-4 to hand the Bluejays their third-straight dual loss and first of 2025.
Guthrie continues a busy week of action with the Tuttle & El Reno Tri Dual on Tuesday, Jan. 14, then a home dual against Duncan on Thursday, Jan. 16. The Bluejays will then go into the weekend with a two-day tournament at Carl Albert.
