Sept. 6, 2024
James Boyd “JB” Castle, age 89, passed from this life to his eternal home with our Savior on Friday, September 6, while at home in Edmond, OK.
Born on a farm west of Jet, OK, JB attended Jet grade school through 6th grade, then in 1946, when his Dad bought a farm southwest of Guthrie, he enrolled at Fogarty JR High. As a child he enjoyed going to Fish’s Park on holidays, swimming in the stock tank in the summer, Sundays after church at Timberlake, roller skating at Driftwood and camping with the Boy Scouts at Salt Plains Lake. Growing up on the family farm, a highlight was being the “engineer” on a threshing crew, operating the tractor that powered the threshing machine.
At Guthrie High School, JB joined ROTC and the National Guard as a senior. After graduating in 1953, he attended Oklahoma A&M for two years, then worked at Boeing in Wichita and the Army Reserves.
JB married Gail Shafer in 1957, with whom he had 4 sons. After being laid off from Boeing in 1957, he applied for active duty with the Army Reserves where he served until 1959. He then returned to Guthrie and worked at the Ford Tractor dealership. In 1973, JB started working as an electrician and in 1976 he took a position in electrical maintenance at University Hospital where he worked until retirement in 1995, at which point he married Georgetta Barker. They enjoyed traveling, farming, and gardening until her passing in 2011.
Along with being a licensed electrician, JB was a master mechanic and loved to work on anything that was broken, help anyone in need, and was a great friend and neighbor to many. In addition to water and snow skiing, he loved to square dance and was at one point the President of the Silver Spurs Squares in Oklahoma City. He loved to help teach all levels of square dance lessons. His last and favorite student was his sweetheart wife Roberta who began taking lessons as they married in 2020. JB and Roberta were active members of Remnant Church of Guthrie.
JB was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Delia Castle; Sisters, Boydell Castle, Arvolene McCurdy, Belva Peck, and Vonda Basden; wife, Georgetta Castle; and great-granddaughter, Kate Womack.
JB is survived by his wife, Roberta Castle of Edmond; his son, Paul Castle and wife, Mara of Guthrie; his son, Gary Castle of Ponca City; his son, Mark Castle and wife, Cindy of Bixby; and his son, Stephen Castle and wife, Valerie of Guthrie.
