Guthrie defeats Comanche for second-straight win

Coach Jadon Davenport and the Guthrie wrestling team picked up dual win No. 2 on the season after downing Comanche, 47-27, Thursday evening.

The Bluejays led for all but the first two matches over the Class 3A Indians with Clayton Carey, Wyatt Silvis and Tyler Powell each earning fall victories. Guthrie is now 2-0 to start the year with a trip to the Mid-American Nationals in Enid coming up Friday.

Comanche won the opening 106-pound match after Aidan Frye pinned Guthrie’s Joel Landry for six points. Chris Jackson defeated Guthrie’s Urijah Sisk by decision in the 113, but the Jays were awarded six since Jackson had missed weight. Senior Kaedin Herendeen broke the tie the following match and gave Guthrie the 11-6 lead by defeating Gage Jessen by tech fall (19-3).

A defending 5A individual state champion, Herendeen is currently ranked as the No. 1 wrestler in the 120-pound weight class for 5A. Jessen, his opponent Thursday, is No. 2 in Class 3A and was a state runner-up a season ago.

Matthew Hunt got a few points back for Comanche after downing Ayden Smith by 12-5 decision, but Matthew Mihalik earned five more for the Jays with a tech fall victory over Hayden Dugan in the 132. Comanche’s Legend Yates pinned Luke Lyons in the 138, making it 16-15 Bluejays.

The next two matches went to Guthrie after Thomas Jirous and Aiden Hardin took down their opponents to extend the lead to 24-15, but a fall win from Comanche’s Mike Lair over Trevor Graves brought it back to within three at 24-21.

Guthrie would go on to win four of the final five matches of the night to secure the dual victory, 47-27. Clayton Carey pinned Logan Stengle in the 165-pound bout, then Bryson Hall won by tech fall over Comanche’s Erik Roy. Roston Uselton suffered a fall to Indians’ 2024 state qualifier Kanon Clift in the 190, but Guthrie responded with two pins of their own in the final two matches thanks to Wyatt Silvis and Tyler Powell.

The Jays now shift their focus to Mid-American Nationals this weekend on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14.
