Guthrie’s Very Merry Christmas Association wrapped up its Christmas Festival weekend on Saturday, December 17th with a fireworks display that truly delivered the thrills and drew an enormous crowd.
The festival began on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Lights at the Cottonwood Flats, where the association has its drive-through, Christmas lights experience every night until New Years. There were food trucks and vendors surrounding picnic tables and fire cans to keep the area warm. Crowds browsed the artistic creations for sale and filled up on burritos, burgers, turkey legs, corn dogs, pitas, popcorn, hot cocoa, cotton candy, seafood, fresh squeezed lemonade, and so much more.
Saturday night, the Illuminated Cruise began at 6:30 p.m. An endless procession of automobiles decorated in holiday lights cruised from the Flats through downtown Guthrie and back. Monster trucks, ATVs, classic cars, a school bus, and even a hearse made the trip all decked out in Christmas lights, inflatables, tinsel, and every Christmas decoration imaginable. Christmas music from the procession filled the streets of Guthrie as the parade of vehicles wound around the Scottish Rite Temple, down Oklahoma, and made its way back to an enormous crowd waiting at the Cottonwood Flats.
There, the celebration continued as revelers drove through the lighted Flats, shopped at the food trucks and vendors, mingled with Santa and the Grinch, and enjoyed the Christmas spirit until the fireworks began at 8:00 p.m. Fireworks a’ Poppin put on a beautiful and impressive display of holiday cheer that ended with an enormous boom.
The seven-block, drivethru Lights at the Cottonwood Flats experience will continue each night through the holidays until January 1st. It starts at the corner of 7th Street and Mansur. This exhibit features more than 30 different large displays of lights and moving Christmas scenes. There is no fee to enter. Donations are accepted at the end of the experience.
