For more than 90 years, Guthrie has been the host to the annual ‘89er Days Parade and Celebration. This historic tradition has always been hosted by the American Legion, and it is the oldest and largest parade in Oklahoma.
The ‘89er Committee, comprisedofLegionmembers and local volunteers, plans and promotes every part of the event, from the parade to the carnival to the Chuck Wagon Feed.
As the celebration has grown, the committee is seeking even more members to help with the important work that goes into this event. Volunteers do not have to be members of the American Legion or veterans. They only need to be friendly and hard working.
“We are extending an invitation to all citizens, organizations, school groups, etc., to be part of helping us put on a big successful ‘89er’s Day celebration,” said Jerry Beranek, Chairman of the ‘89er Committee. “Our goal this year is to have community volunteers make our week of celebration run as smoothly as we can. This would put a good face on Guthrie for our visitors to see and remember all the fun they had, so they will return again and again.”
Opportunities include assisting with the planning of any of the events, along with promotions, parade, food truck, and vendor applications, as well as helping with events on site.
“If you have time to join us at our monthly meeting with new ideas, planning, and (can) volunteer to help, you would be more than welcome,” Beranek said.
The ‘89ers Parade and Celebration brings thousands of tourists to Guthrie each year and is a boost to the city and local businesses. Former Guthrie residents travel from as far as other states and foreign countries to return for the celebration, an important social and economic event for the city.
Committee meetings are held once a month on the second Wednesday. The next meeting will take place on Oct. 12 at noon at the American Legion building, 123 N. 1st Street, in Guthrie. Volunteers will be served a complimentary lunch from Golden Chick.
Those with questions, or first-time attendees, are asked to contact the Legion on Mondays or Thursdays to RSVP at (405) 282-2589; send a message via email to lebronpost58@lebronpost58. com; or message the ‘89ers Facebook page at facebook. com/89erDays.
Also on the ‘89er Days Facebook Page, Guthrie locals and tourists are invited to vote on the parade theme for the 2023 celebration. Go to facebook. com/89erDays, scroll to the survey, and make your choice. Voting will remain open until Oct. 10.
