Hope House celebrates victory

On its second New Year’s Eve holiday as an establishment, The Hope House celebrated its quarterly accomplishments for its members.

That includes sobriety awards for people who have now hit the 500 days sober milestone. Orvill Myers, who runs the hope house, said the people receive chips and certificates for the accomplishments as well as commemorative gifts.

“This year, we have a couple of people with over 500 days of sobriety at the Hope House,” Myers said. “The numbers go down from there of course.”

Currently, the Hope House has 20 men, 13 women and six children residing in the Hope House on a full-time basis. All of those men and women will be receiving a certificate for their days of accomplishments.

The group also honored some of the community supporters. The Police, the Sheriff’s Office, some churches, organizations and the Emergency Services Operation have representatives invited to be in attendance to honor their contributions.

Myers has some lofty goals for 2022, but perhaps the biggest one is the purchase of the property that has the building the Hope House currently uses.

“There were actually two buildings on that property,” Myers said. “The one we currently use, which is 18,050 square feet and then the second building, which is quite a bit newer. It’s only about 12 years old. It’s 2,000 square feet and was built as a daycare currently being used by our property owner (North Care Mental Health).”

Myers estimates the value of the property to be more than $1 million. The owners of the property are willing to sell to the Hope House’ group (Neighborhood Hope Dealers) for about $240,000. Raising the necessary funds for the purchase will be their goal. About $40,000 has come recently and is in the bank.

He said right now there isn’t any centralized source near Guthrie for Infant Crises Services or needs of any kind.

“We hope to utilize part of that building for that,” Myers said. “We’ve been already asking the community for and stocking up on diapers and baby wipes and tons of furniture. We have a lot of baby furniture.”

“We want to utilize it to make that new service available to the community in conjunction with what we already do, which is homeless shelter and sobriety support.”

Hope House opened in June of 2020. So far, it has served 260 people who have come through Hope House for various needs and reasons.

The Hope House is totally independent and totally community funded. The building is located at 1916 E Perkins.

“Our plans are to continue to grow and be able to offer more services to our clients and to the community at large,” Myers said.
