Guthrie finishes tied for fourth in first Girl's State Wrestling Championships

Klaribel Kirk and Khaleah Kirk both finished in second place in their weight classes Thursday night in the first ever Girls High School Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City. Guthrie tied for fourth place in the team standings. Broken Arrow won the title.

Klaribel was pinned by Ashondra Valencia (13-0) a junior from Tahlequah in the finals in 1:51. She finished the day 2-1 and the season at 14-5. Kirk came from behind in both her first matches to win. In the quarterfinals she was behind 4-1 in the third period when she reversed Emma Travis of Sallisaw and then got near fall points to win the match 6-4. The third period magic carried over into the semi-finals as well when she faced the #1 seeded Beyonce Coronado of Altus. Coronado had a 7-0 lead after two periods because of some near fall points and Kirk would turn the tables in the final period with a reversal and a near fall to make the score 7-5 when she pinned Coronado at the 4:53 mark of the match.

Khaleah was facing Allison Hynes of Broken Arrow for the second year in a row in the finals. Kirk was penalized twice by the referee for illegal holds for a 2-0 deficit going into the third period. Hynes got a late takedown to secure a 4-0 win. Kirk finished the season at 18-1.

Khaleah advanced to the finals with a 54-second fall in the quarterfinals and a fall in 1:46 in the semi-finals beating the seevnth seeded and fifth seeded wrestlers to get to the final against the #2 seeded Hynes who is a senior.
