The Guthrie community is mourning the loss of Judge Louis A. Duel, who passed away on November 21, 2025. His steady leadership, generous spirit, and unwavering compassion shaped countless lives throughout Logan County and beyond. Judge Duel dedicated his career, and truly, his life, to serving others. Whether from the bench, in the courthouse hallways, or out in the community, he was known for listening deeply, offering guidance without judgment, and caring for others far more than he ever cared for himself. Born May 8, 1963, Duel spent his career building a legacy of service in Logan County. Before becoming a judge, he served as a deputy sheriff with the Logan County Sheriff’s Department and after graduating from OCU School of Law, was an assistant district attorney. In each role he earned a reputation for fairness, steadiness, and humility. He went on to serve Logan County as associate judge for almost 16 years, becoming a trusted and respected presence. He was known for being tough when he needed to be and for always standing firmly for what was right. Those who appeared before him often left feeling heard rather than judged, reflecting his belief that justice should balance accountability with compassion. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 29, at First Christian Church in Guthrie, with interment to follow at Summit View Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 3:00 PM 7:00 PM. Friday, November 28, at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home. Judge Duel’s passing leaves a deep void in Guthrie, but his legacy of fairness, integrity, and kindness will continue to guide the community he served so faithfully.
