Three people were arrested Tuesday, May 28 after being accused of dumping over 30 cats on the side of the road in Guthrie.
Brook, Jason and Keegan Wanzer were arrested following the discovery of the cats along Industrial Road by the Logan County Sheriff’s deputy on Monday night. Major Greg Randolph with the Logan County Sheriff’s office said the Wanzer’s became overwhelmed with the growing number of cats and couldn’t handle them any longer.
The arrest for the Wanzers was filed for dumping and abusing the cats. They face felony charges for those counts.
Following their discovery, the cats were taken to Helping Community Paws and Claws, a spay and neuter group based out of Logan County. Lisa New, owner of Helping Community Paws and Claws, says that help has to come from the community to prevent something like this from happening again.
“We can’t be doing this,” New said. “There are other options.”
New’s organization offers free spay and neuter appointments for those in Logan County. She strongly encourages people to take advantage of the services that her organization provides. She wants this situation to serve as a wakeup call for those who haven’t fixed their animals yet.
“I work so hard to prevent this and now I’m the one who is left to clean up the mess,” New said. “I am begging people to please get their animals fixed.”
The cats have been made available for adoption. Those interested in adopting can find more information at the Helping Community Paws and Claws website.
