December 13th, volunteers gathered at Summit View Cemetery to pay tribute to local veterans during Wreaths Across America, a national nonprofit organization that honors and remembers U.S. military veterans by placing wreaths on their graves.
There are 1,856 identified veterans buried at Summit View Cemetery, and this year, volunteers were able to place more than 1,400 wreaths, with a ceremonial presentation highlighting the event. Organizers hope to place even more wreaths next year to honor every veteran.
Members of the community came together for the occasion, including Guthrie High School JROTC, Honor Society, FFA, Student Council, and local Boy Scout troops, who braved the cold to place the wreaths.Eagle Scout Andrew Willoughby played a key role in making the event possible by identifying veterans in the cemetery as part of his Eagle Scout project.
The annual event serves as a meaningful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served, bringing the community together to honor and remember Guthrie’s veterans so that their legacy is never forgotten.
