The spirit of Oklahoma’s beginnings comes alive this week as Guthrie kicks off its annual ‘89er Days Celebration, a tradition that honors the city’s founding and the historic moment that put it on the map.
The celebration traces back to the Land Run of 1889, when thousands of settlers gathered along the border of unassigned lands and, at the signal of high noon on April 22, raced to claim property. Within hours, Guthrie transformed from open prairie into a bustling community of tents, wagons and determined pioneers. The city quickly grew into an organized town and became the first capital of Oklahoma Territory.
