BancFirst Guthrie is pleased to announce a reception honoring Helen L. Freudenberger Holmes (1915 – 1997) on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 9:30am in their lobby at 202 W. Oklahoma. The reception will follow the unveiling of a new highway memorial sign at Hwy 33 & 12th Street in Guthrie in honor of Holmes. A second memorial sign will be placed at Hwy 33 & I-35.
Helen L. Freudenberger Holmes was the Mayor of Guthrie, a distinguished newspaper journalist, teacher, and Logan County historian. In addition, she was the first Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and military member sworn in to active duty in World War II from Oklahoma. She retired with the rank of Major. Holmes was inducted into the U.S. Army Women’s Foundation Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma State University College of Arts and Sciences as Distinguished Alumna.
