The GHS girls’ soccer team suffered their most lopsided loss of the season Tuesday, losing 0-7 on the road to district foe El Reno.
After a 1-2 finish at the Southern Coast Cup in Foley, Alabama, last weekend, the Lady Jays returned to Oklahoma for an afternoon showdown with the Lady Indians. Guthrie gave up hat tricks to two different players and defended over 20 shots on goal while only getting off two looks at the net themselves.
El Reno forward Lily Hayes scored the first of her three goals early on to put the home team up 1-0, then midfielders Madison Rochdi and Conley Knapp each found the back of the net to make it 3-0 in just the first 20 minutes of the match. Guthrie struggled to stop the Lady Indians’ quick and versatile attackers, who were able to fight through defensive challenges and keep goalkeeper Kendall Farris on her heels all day.
El Reno took a 4-0 lead into the halftime break after Hayes scored her second goal with four minutes to go in the half. She connected on the shot after Farris stepped out of the net to contest her run onto the ball, which Hayes countered by touching it past the keeper for the wide open look.
Guthrie was outmatched when it came to time of possession, as the ball spent a large majority of its time in the Jays’ half of the field. Though they were able to find a couple of shot opportunities in the first half, they were few and far between and were completely stifled in the second half.
El Reno scored their final three goals of the match all within three minutes of each other. After nearly 20 minutes of back-and-forth to start the second half, Hayes completed the hat trick by squeaking the ball past Farris off of a corner kick in the 69th minute. A minute later in the 70th, Rochdi scored on a right-footed strike from left field that soared over Farris’ outstretched arms, then again a minute later from center field, giving Rochdi a hat trick as well.
El Reno proceeded to win the match, 7-0, to give the Lady Jays their second-straight loss. Guthrie falls to 4-5 on the season and 1-1 in District 5A-2 play, while El Reno improves to 4-4 and 2-0 in district. With the win, the Lady Indians jumped Guthrie for the No. 2 spot in the district standings.
Coach Mathew Engle’s Lady Jays have a couple of days to recoup before making the long trip northwest to face Guymon in another district matchup, Friday, April 11.
